A prophet who never gave up

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted, he sent me to proclaim liberty to captives, a sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free and to proclaim the year of the favour of the Lord!

Today, the Catholic Community of the Archdiocese of Suva paid their last tribute to Fr. Kevin Barr. Archbishop Peter Loy Chong led the Requiem Mass. Accompanied him were his brother priests.

Fr. Kevin was born on 2nd August 1936. He was a man of humility, compassion and had a great passion for the poor, the oppressed, the homeless, the broken, the shoeshine boys, the low-income earners and the needy. He was a prophet, and he fought for justice, lived his faith and never gave up till the end.

Archbishop Peter, in his homily said, “Fr. Kevin believed in a God who hears the cry of the poor and wants to transform the world. Fr Kevin Barr’s life can be summed up in this commitment to the God of the poor, to justice, to love and peace and this was his whole life all about, the radical discipleship of the Mission of Jesus and God.

Jesus challenges his disciples and also challenges us to transform our world according to the values of Gods Kingdom. His life was grounded on the values of the Kingdom. This was Fr. Barr’s constitution. It is also our constitution as Christians. This is our blueprint. This is the charter that paves the way for Fr. Barr and his work.

Fr. Barr wrote many books and established projects. One of his projects is the Lagilagi Project. He taught at the Pacific Regional Seminary and the Pacific Theological College.

He left behind a legacy for all of us.

We thank God for the life of Fr. Kevin Barr. May he rest in peace.
