Paula Waqa gardening in Fiji
“If you don’t plant any yams this month, grandson, this same month next year you will ask yourself why am I hungry, and why others are complaining?”
This was a word of an old man to his grandson before he died in my village. Since we set foot in Wailoku, we strengthened our connectedness with nature by meditation and gardening.
“Why am I hungry, and why are others complaining?”
Gardening enriched our bond as brothers and our fellow creatures, through whose power we able to plant vegetables and root crops, with the humble help of Brother Rain and Sister Sun. We didn’t have to buy expensive vegetables in the market, nor any taro or cassava top to plant but we used the one we had as a way of cultivating nature again.
At the end of the program and as I look at our garden now, I believe we won’t have to answer the question: “Why am I hungry, and why are others complaining?”
Paula Waqa is doing his Spiritual Year in Suva, Fiji.
