Fr Otto Imholte’s Chalice finds its way back to Mission in Fiji

Fr Otto Imholte’s Chalice finds its way back to Mission in Fiji - Fr John McEvoy

Fr Otto Imholte served as a Columban Missionary Priest in Fiji for several years. He died on the 25th July 2022 in the USA. He served in Varoka Ba from 1970 – 1974. He was Principal of Corpus Christi Teacher’s Training Collage from 1976 to 1979. He was also a member of the staff of Xavier Collage for some years.

At his funeral Fr Chris Saenz, (Columban Regional Director in America) met Fr Otto’s only surviving Sister Mrs Eileen Paulus. After the funeral she gave Fr Chris some of Fr Otto’s stoles and his chalice, wondering if they could be used somewhere that Fr Otto was on mission. Fr Chris sent the chalice back to Fiji and Eileen was delighted.

On Tuesday morning 23rd May 2023 I presented Fr Otto’s chalice to Mr Remesio Rogovakalali, present principal, the staff, and students of Corpus Christi Collage. This was done during their morning Mass at the college celebrated by Columban Fr Willie Lee.

Present at the presentation was Mrs Makalesi Vinau, now a member of staff who was a pupil when Fr Otto was principal. She and Master Remesio shared memories of the days when Fr Otto was principal of Corpus Christi College.
