In a significant step towards ecological justice, the Catholic Community of Lagi Village recently hosted a workshop aimed at addressing the pressing environmental issues facing their community. Residents came together to discuss the
alarming deterioration of their surroundings and the impact of human activity on their local ecosystem.
During the workshop, villagers identified key areas of destruction that threaten both their environment and their way of life. Deforestation emerged as a major concern, with participants noting that the clearing of forests for agriculture and development is not only stripping the land of its natural resources but also disrupting local wildlife habitats. “Our forests are vital for maintaining the balance of our ecosystem. Their loss means the loss of biodiversity and resources for future generations,” remarked one local leader.
Pollution was another critical topic of discussion, particularly concerning the rivers and seas that are central to the community’s livelihood. Many villagers reported seeing increased waste dumping in their waterways, leading to contamination that affects marine life.
“Our seas are sacred to us, but they are becoming lifeless. We need to take action to protect them,” said Militoni a youth leader in Lagi Village. The workshop underscored the villagers' commitment to advocacy and sustainable practices. Participants brainstormed various initiatives aimed at reversing the damage done to their environment. These included reforestation projects, community clean-up days, and educational programs to raise awareness about pollution and its consequences. ‘The Women’s Group are taking up the Job for Nature Program under the Ministry of Finance, to plant more trees for the village says Laisa, the Women’s representative of the Village.
Apete Visisio, a local Catechist and advocate for ecological justice, emphasized the moral imperative of caring for the environment. “As stewards of God’s creation, it is our duty to protect the land and water that sustains us. This workshop is just the beginning of our journey towards healing our environment,” he stated.
The Catholic Community of Lagi Village plans to work closely with local government and environmental organizations to implement their ideas and foster a spirit of cooperation among neighboring villages. Their goal is to create a sustainable future that honors both their cultural heritage and the natural world. As communities across the globe grapple with environmental challenges, Lagi Village’s proactive stance serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of local action. Through solidarity and shared purpose, they aim not only to restore their environment but to inspire others to join the movement for ecological justice.
