Labasa, September 20, 2024 — The Youth at Holy Family Parish community in Labasa gathered on Friday, September 20th, for a transformative Social Empowerment Workshop aimed at addressing critical issues affecting local youth. The event brought together young leaders to engage in meaningful discussions and develop actionable solutions to pressing challenges, including teenage pregnancy, school dropouts, unemployment, and substance abuse.
Throughout the day, participants engaged in interactive sessions designed to foster dialogue and collaboration. Small group discussions allowed youths to voice their experiences and concerns, creating a safe space for sharing. Key issues that emerged included:
- Teenage Pregnancy: Many attendees expressed the need for better sexual health education and access to resources that can help young people make informed decisions.
- School Dropouts: The group highlighted the lack of support systems for students facing academic challenges, advocating for mentorship programs to help keep them engaged in their education.
- Unemployment: Discussions centered around the need for skills training and job placement programs to prepare youths for the job market, as many felt unprepared for employment opportunities.
- Substance Abuse: Participants acknowledged the growing concern of substance abuse among peers and called for community awareness campaigns to educate young people about the dangers and provide healthier alternatives.
The workshop concluded with a commitment to action, as participants developed a series of action plans aimed at addressing these issues head-on. Plans were made to establish peer support groups, create informational campaigns, and collaborate with local schools and organizations to implement skills training workshops.
"Today's workshop was just the beginning," said workshop coordinator, Ioane. "Our youth have shown incredible resilience and creativity. Together, we will work towards a brighter future for all young people in the Holy Family Parish."
