Laudato Si Launch – Call for the ‘Care for our Common Home’ to Children commences’

In a serene ceremony following a day of learning about Laudato Si on Saturday, May 12th 2024, a group of children from St. Pius Parish In Raiwaqa, led by Emily Tabua, the Head of the Commission of Faith Formation, officially launched the Laudato Si Campaign by unveiling the Laudato Si Mural. This unique mural, crafted entirely from Masi (Tapa) and measuring 4 meters in length and 3 metres in width, features the artistry of two brown hands symbolically holding our planet Earth. The mural was drawn and painted by two 15 year old high school students attending 2 Suva schools namely, St. Joseph’s Secondary School and Yat Sen Secondary School.

Emphasising on the Pope’s encyclical letter on Laudato Si, the children through an earlier workshop on Laudato Si and Climate Change had grasped a fair idea on the status of our planet. During the launch event, the children expressed their excitement and enthusiasm by clapping as Emily inaugurated the campaign with the first message written on the mural. Other children, who had prepared their messages in advance, eagerly awaited their turns to write a message about caring for our common home.

The Laudato Si Masi Mural will embark on a journey to visit 14 Catholic Primary Schools across Viti Levu and will also be showcased at 3 youth events in Navua, Tavua, and Suva. Its final destination will be the Missionary Society of Saint Columban’s Central House at 119 Queen Elizabeth Drive, Nasese, Suva.

Laudato Si Awareness and Campaign all over the world is from the 19th to the 26th of May, 2024.

Ioane Nawaikula is the JPIC Coordinator in Fiji.
