St John of the CrossJohn of the Cross was born in 1542 in Fontiveros, Spain. He became a Carmelite monk in 1563 and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1567. A year later, he was summoned to join St Teresa of Avila to reform the Carmelite order, which had resulted in him imprisoned due to the friction. During his imprisonment, he wrote poems some of which is well known “The Dark Night Soul” and “The Living Flame of Love” He died on December 14th 1591 from a skin condition that resulted in infection. He is the patron Saint for Spanish poets and mystics. He is recognised as a doctor of the church. He was canonized by Pope Benedict 13th in 1726.
