A Timely Counseling Course

I asked some Methodist ladies what they would say to a group of Church ministers. “Drink less yaqona!” was the immediate response.

I was very pleased to spend two weeks recently mentoring four people in teaching counseling to 16 others from different Christian denominations. These four were the top graduates from a similar course organized by Pacific Theological College, in which I taught, last year.

Former Columban lay missionary, Vosita Lenisaurua, is the director of the pastoral counseling course. It consists of three periods of one month each, spread over one year. At the end of the course a diploma is awarded to the successful participants. The participants are sent by their own Christian Churches. There were 26 participants in the first course and 16 in the present course.

Participating in this ecumenical project is very rewarding. We all learn about each other and the different apostolates being carried on by the Churches. The sharing and discussion is very deep. The four people I was mentoring will be counseling leaders in the future.

This is a course which is needed – to respond to the many interpersonal and social problems in Fiji society today.
