Do others, apart from the ‘chosen’, also receive God’s revelation and grace? The prayer of Jesus in today’s Gospel confirms that they do! In fact, Jesus thanks his Father for the unbelievers who apparently understood God’s revelation better than those who considered themselves to belong to ‘God’s chosen race’ and the sole recipients of His revelation!
The Gospel text simply explains that one does not need to understand rocket science to comprehend God’s revelation; in fact, the intellect often becomes a barrier to understanding the mysterious ways of God. An open mind, a humble heart and faith are all that are required. This is precisely why Moses, in the first reading, is able to comprehend God’s revelation through the burning bush. The revelation gave him an insight into the nature of God as well as the nature of his calling.
“Earth's crammed with heaven, and every common bush afire with God. But only he who sees takes off his shoes; the rest sit round and pluck blackberries.” - Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
