On the evening of Friday, April 12, 2024, a joint Columban Youth Night brought together young members from St. Pius in Raiwaqa and Holy Family in Labasa. This evening marked a significant occasion as these youths shared their Parish experiences and relished the camaraderie among peers. The collaboration between these two youth groups was a memorable event that fostered a strong bond.
Being the only two parishes in Fiji under the care of the Columban Fathers, the significance of the week was highlighted during the recent ordination of Fr Ioane Naio. The week-long preparations and ordination ceremony of Fr Naio, who serves in Labasa, provided an opportunity for the Holy Family Youths to visit Suva and engage with their counterparts from St. Pius throughout the week.
During the joint evening gathering, the youths participated in a structured program that included discussions on three key questions:
1. What are the strengths and weaknesses encountered by young people in your Parish?
2. What motivates you to be part of the Catholic Youth community?
3. What valuable lessons do you wish to carry with you when you transition from your Catholic youth group?
These thought-provoking questions facilitated meaningful interactions, enabling the youths to deepen their understanding of each other, share their challenges, and reflect on their spiritual journeys. The session also sparked discussions on the various issues faced by young individuals within the church, with some expressing interest in exploring vocational callings.
A brief discussion on Laudato Si was incorporated into the program, revealing a surprising level of familiarity among the youths. The emphasis was placed on caring for our planet Earth and addressing climate change, drawing parallels to the responsibility bestowed upon humanity as stewards of God's creation, as depicted in the book of Genesis.
This gathering not only strengthened the bond among Columban Youth but also provided a platform for meaningful discussions, spiritual reflections and environmental awareness.
