Fr. Vince McCarthy

Fr. Vince McCarthy, from Buffalo, New York, arrived in Fiji in February 1966. From 1967 to 1970 Fr. Vince worked in Samabula parish. He studied Fijian for 3 months at USP and then spent four years in Nabala. Lastly, he spent just over three years at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Suva.

Fr Vince loved basketball and coached the Fiji basketball team for a time. He promoted the Pioneer movement and had regular Monday night devotions at the Cathedral in Suva after which new members would promise to give up alcohol for a specified period of time and receive the Pioneer pin as a sign of promise.
