Dialogue in Schools: St. Joseph Secondary School, Suva
On 13th February 2025, 100 secondary school students gathered at a hall to attend an informative session on Interreligious Dialogue conducted by the Columban IRD (Interreligious Dialogue) Coordinator. The event aimed to raise awareness among the students about the importance of dialogue and understanding between different religious communities and in school. This will also help the students take care of one another and create peace and harmony among religions/nations.
The Columban IRD Coordinator, who emphasized the significance of interreligious dialogue in today's increasingly diverse and interconnected world, included a detailed explanation of the concept of interreligious dialogue, covering what Interreligious Dialogue is, what it is not and the four forms of dialogue, its principles, and its role in reducing religious conflicts. The students were introduced to various examples of successful interfaith dialogue activities, showcasing how communication and understanding between different religious groups can lead to peaceful resolutions and a greater sense of community.
A significant part of the session focused on the core values that included respect for diversity, the importance of listening, and empathy. The IRD Coordinator also led the students through practical exercises and interactive activities that encouraged critical thinking and reflection on the importance of collaboration between religious groups in resolving global and local issues. The students actively participated and asked insightful questions, with a deep interest in the topic.
In conclusion, the session emphasized the importance of continuing interreligious dialogues for global peace and creating an inclusive and harmonious society.
