In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the Columban community at the Central House in Nasese, Suva, dedicated time to reflect on and contribute to this vital cause. The Fiji Cancer Society was invited, represented by Farnia Simion and Shweta, who help to administer critical care and support to cancer patients across Fiji. Their work ensures that patients and their families receive necessary services while navigating this difficult phase.
A highlight of the gathering was the testimony of Farnia Simion, a breast cancer survivor herself. She shared her personal journey—from detection, through treatment and post-operation—all while caring for her one-year-old son during the turmoil of the COVID-19 pandemic. Six years on, Farnia lives happily, running her own business and administering church activities, attributing her survival to "God's providence and blessings," alongside the support of her family.
As the most diagnosed cancer for females in Fiji, late detection, limited screening uptake, and access barriers for rural communities remain significant challenges. The gathering underscored that community awareness and parish-based support are essential to reduce these barriers.
The supportive Columbans present made a heartfelt donation to the Fiji Cancer Society to aid their worthy mission. Acknowledgement goes towards the Columbans for weloming and being a part of this event, most importantly to Sapeta who was responsible for the planning and coordination of the encounter.
