Report on Recent Further Flooding in Ba, 4-6th Fe 2022

Heavy rain began on night of 4/5th and continued right through Saturday and on/off on Sunday until about midday.

Results:

  1. We had 10 parishioners from Nadrugu (who chose to keep selling in the market despite seeing the bad weather coming). We gave them tea and shelter in the basement of the presbytery until the police and DO finally open an evacuation centre at Ba Sangam College at about 5pm on Sat, where we brought them. The place was full of Koroboya people (about 60) who also over-stayed in town on Saturday, doing their selling.

  2. On Sunday morning, after Mass, we visited evacuees at

    a) Ba Sangam

    b) DAV College.

For the former, most were already leaving, because the govt ordered the clearing of all schools in preparation of resumption of classes and exams on Monday (this directive was changed later in the day). The group from Nadrugu seemed to have no money for transport, so I took them to Vunisamaloa (about 6kms), through 2 quite deep floods on the main Ba to Navala road.

For DAV College there were about 40 Votua people, to whom we lent the Caritas stove, gas, and 2 cartons of biscuits. They eventually cleared out at 2pm, and I had to go to get the Caritas yaya back.

  3. There was another small group (Navala people) sheltering at Namosau Methodist school to which Emil Muller gave groceries but had not transport, so I went in the van.
  4. The situation in Votua was, as usual, quite bad (see photos). There were 59 evacuees (14 families) sheltered at the school on Sat night/Sunday. By Sunday afternoon, the ECE was cleaned, and they all gone home. Luckily, power and water supply remained in most parts of Ba over the 2 days.
